Owen has begun smiling!  His first was last Thursday when we were having our morning play.  They don't happen all the time yet, but when they do, they're awesome!  We tried to catch him in the act today...here's what we got instead...

the wonders of coffee

I have never been a coffee drinker, but have had some the past 3 days (if you can call half coffee, half milk, plus sugar coffee...really it's more like liquid coffee ice cream) and it has been wonderful! For the first time in my life I actually understand the full appeal of it.  Even though we are getting marginally more sleep these days at night, Owen is not napping as long during the day, which means I have not been getting a daytime nap, and hence the coffee!

We had a great weekend.  It started out with a dessert at our friends Joe and Anna's place on Friday - semlor (a traditional Swedish Fat Tuesday dessert), then saturday we had an afternoon play date that morphed into dinner at our friends Lars and Elissa's place.  Owen was the lucky recipient of an awesome sock monkey toque from his friend Tor.  Finally a toque that (almost) fits his head!
Sunday started out with brunch at our friend Annia's place, followed later in the evening (by which I mean 6pm...which feels "late" these days) by Owen's first babysitter experience.  We left him in the capable hands of our friends, Andrew and Kit, and walked 5 blocks away to treat ourselves to a fancy schmancy dinner at a local fancy schmancy restaurant, Heidi's, to celebrate our 5th (legal) wedding anniversary.  Owen did great...he slept the whole time we were gone!
Owen did great being out this weekend.  There were one or two minor meltdowns, but he spent most of the time either asleep in the moby wrap nestled next to one of us, asleep in the warm arms of friends wanting to hold him, or quietly alert just taking it all in.  

6 week check up

So today the three of us got up and went to my 6 week postpartum checkup, and Owen got to see again the fabulous lady who was the very first to welcome him into this world.

After that, we had a little family outing to the bookstore, which is just a block away from the doctor's office, hopefully starting Owen on a lifetime of loving books!  Owen got himself a bunch of new books, which I eagerly read to him once we got home (I have been growing tired of rotating through the same 10 we had!).  Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of Owen choosing his books...which he did very well from his sleeping position in his stroller!

growing steadily

We ended up going to the doctor's this past Monday.  Owen has the common cold with no secondary infection, i.e. it has not moved into his chest or ears, so that was good news!  He is getting steadily better, and continues to put on weight appropriately.  He weighed in at 7lbs. 1oz on his 5 week b-day.  He's even starting to outgrow some outfits!  Soon he'll be wearing 0-3M sizes instead of newborn!  He's also starting to have much more awake time, which means we get to see his big blue eyes more often!  In addition, he is starting to make noises other than crying and the plethora of grunts and groans we hear through the monitor as he sleeps.  My favourite noise is an "a-oo".  Think very high pitched owl.  Next milestone is smiling...I'll keep you posted!

One month old

Happy one month birthday little peanut!  Apparently we are celebrating it with.....drum roll....a cold?!  At exactly 1 month old (this past Thursday), Owen got his first cold.  Not exactly the milestone we wanted to celebrate this early, but so it goes.  Poor little guy has a cough and is plugged up.  If the cough doesn't clear by tomorrow, we'll be headed to the doctors.  Despite being sick, he seems to be in good spirits and still enjoying some of the finer points of life at 1 month!

Our wonderful doula is a bit of a jack of all trades.  She is a professional photographer in addition to being a doula, and once she passes her exams on Wednesday, she will also be an RN!  So we had a photo shoot today with her to get some family photos and solos of Owen on his 4 week birthday.  In addition, we got a CD of photos she took during the birth.  Some of our favourites are posted below!

Last week Owen got all "moby-ed" up and we went for a quick walk around the block (as much as I hate a warm/non-snowy winter, it has made getting out of the house easy!) and then on to the grocery store where Owen was a tremendous hit with the deli counter folk!

A couple days later Dad got to be the baby wearer on another walk around the block.  Owen sure does love being in the moby!
